Chapter 5

As usual, Ed ordered the fish and chips basket, and she got the rib eye steak dinner. Not that it mattered because they always shared, and tonight was no different.

Except it was. Jenna hated that he felt like she’d been shortchanged by dating him. What he didn’t understand, and what she might tell him one day, was that she’d known the moment they’d met that he was the man she’d been waiting her entire life for. She might also tell him that she never, ever gave up on those she cared about, and once she’d fallen in love with him, she was in it for the long haul—even if that included stalkers, a physically and emotionally damaged daughter, or anything else that might be thrown their way.

But for now, all she was going to do was enjoy their little getaway. If he could put it all out of his mind for a few hours, so could she, even if she was a little concerned about tackling the trail back to Cheboygan after dark. Ed didn’t seem the least bit worried though, paying the bill, helping her bundle back up again, and then, wrapping an arm around her shoulders, they strolled downtown for a block or so, looking in the windows of the shops that catered to tourists.

It was a short walk though. Without the protection offered by the helmets they carried, the frigid wind blowing in across the lake stung their frozen cheeks and they hurried back to the snowmobiles.

“Follow me,” Ed told her, just before he flipped the visor down and headed down the road—in the opposite direction of the trail. With one brief glance at the dark sky, Jenna took off after him.

He stopped once, near the park at the foot of the bridge. With the Christmas lights already up, reflecting on the water below, she wished she’d brought her camera along. The problem was, her fingers would probably freeze solid if she tried to snap a photo, so it was just as well it was locked—along with her purse—in the glove compartment of the SUV.

After a few moments, he took off again, leaving her no option but to follow, wondering where they were going now. One thing was for sure, it wasn’t in the direction they should be heading. When he pulled into the driveway of a local hotel, her heart sank, until he held up two fingers in a peace sign kind of way.

“Is this why you wanted to know about my party schedule?” she asked as they walked toward the entrance.

“It is. I hope it’s okay. I just wanted some extra time with you, and hoped you wouldn’t be opposed to spending most of the weekend up here.”

“It’s fine. Really. I wish I’d known though. I’d have brought some clean clothes and pajamas.”

“Never fear,” he said, grinning as he opened the door. “Holly makes a perfect partner in crime.”

“What do you mean?”

“Why do you think I’ve been lugging this backpack everywhere? Thanks to Holly, we’ve both got a change of clothes.
